Beyond the meal: giving customers a reason to return

Singapore heritage eateries are experimenting with social activities and creative collaborations. The lasting opportunity is to build a relationship that continues after the event.

A meal can introduce someone to a brand. A shared experience can give them another reason to remember it. A CNA report published on 8 October 2026 described two Singapore heritage businesses trying activities beyond their usual menus.

Yum Cha has been hosting Friday afternoon mahjong sessions during quieter hours. Chin Mee Chin Confectionery collaborated with Woods in the Books on an art and book fair on 2 and 3 October. The report presented these initiatives as ways to reach new audiences and encourage customers to return.

Start with the people, not the promotion

Our perspective is that a useful activity begins with a simple question: who would enjoy spending time together here? An older regular and a younger family member may connect through a familiar story, a creative activity or an introduction to something new. The idea should be easy to explain and comfortable to join.

That does not mean every food business needs an event calendar. Some outlets have limited seating, shared premises or a fast-moving queue. A small collaboration, a thoughtful online story or a conversation with customers may suit the setting better than a large gathering.

Keep the everyday experience dependable

A special activity should support the meal rather than make an ordinary visit harder. Think through staffing, seating, noise and preparation before announcing it. If the activity takes place during a quieter period, explain the timing clearly so diners know what to expect.

The same care applies online. Someone who discovers a brand through a social post should be able to find its menu, outlet information and delivery options without searching through unrelated material. An engaging invitation is only the beginning; the next step should be straightforward.

Look beyond the first visit

An event can draw attention without creating a lasting habit. After a small trial, ask participants what they enjoyed and whether they would visit again for the food. Compare that feedback with the staff time and practical demands involved. Attendance alone does not establish that an activity has strengthened the business.

For a heritage brand, the opportunity is to let more people understand its character while continuing to serve those who already trust it. New experiences work best when they feel connected to that character, rather than added simply because a format is popular.

For Hwa Heng, this is a useful industry lesson to consider: people remember how a brand makes them feel as well as what it serves. Building that connection calls for consistency, clear communication and ideas that fit the people and place.
